HYDROPHIL bamboo toothbrushes & more
After using for so many years my bamboo utensil set I got more and more convinced about the great qualities of bamboo, especially to replace short-lived items made of plastic, a material that lasts forever but is designed mostly to throw away.
Bamboo is an endlessly renewable resource. It's not a tree - it's a grass, and it grows like one. When it's harvested, it doesn't need to be replanted, because it will grow a new shoot from its extensive root system. Farmed bamboo stabilizes the earth with its roots, preventing erosion. It takes in greenhouse gasses and it produces 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.
And one day I saw another item we all use and that we need to constantly replace, that is normally made of plastic, also made of bamboo: Toothbrushes! I immediately bought for my whole family to try them out. But the ones I got were not very comfortable to handle and the brush was too big...
But I was determined to find the right ones, so I embarked the whole family to try all bamboo toothbrushes available in the market. Many were discarded from the start: they came fully wrapped in plastic (!!!) or traveled long distances back and forth before arriving here. After this long process my husband, son and myself unanimously chose the toothbrushes from HYDROPHIL.
HYDROPHIL was conceived in 2013 by Christoph, Sebastian and Wanja from Hamburg, who became friends while volunteering for the charity organisation Viva con Agua. They dreamed about producing goods that were not only fair trade, sustainable and vegan but also water-neutral: using and polluting as little water as possible during its production.
HYDROPHIL offers adults and kids toothbrushes, with medium or extra-soft brushes, and come in different colors. They also offer products like bamboo toothbrush travel cases and exquisite hand-made soaps. They run a blog on sustainability since 2012 (in German), and donate 10% of their profits to the charity organisation Viva con Agua.
