Perfumes of Spring

Perfumes of Spring

Spring opens our senses for enjoyment and⁣ our hearts for enchantment. An ode to romantic love, “Perfumes of Spring” is an invitation to navigate through the archetypes, goddesses, muses and women of flesh and blood that have symbolized love across times and cultures. Embroidered poems from Neruda and Tagore guide us through the ineffable landscape of love evoking its magic and power.⁣

Like Penelope with her loom, our hand-woven fabrics convey different facets of love through their textures and shades. A dreamy pale blue of hope and longing for union, a madder red sprinkle of passion, the subtle and deep shades of green — a marriage of the earthy marigold flowers with the soulful indigo — of the blissful fecundity of fulfillment, to the grey of despair and poignant fear of separation ever present in the endless mystery of love.⁣

MAKU, which means "weaving shuttle" in Bengali, is a slow fiber movement that uses only hand-spun and hand-woven cloth in natural Indigo, the designs of which are realized in collaboration with artisans on their looms.

MAKU was founded by Santanu Das, a conceptual artist from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, that has long been influenced by the testimony of the Indian textile heritage, culture and skills. Santanu has also taken steps towards designing a system to develop a better living environment panning from recycling waste (e.g. the rests of fabric are transformed into hand made paper for tags) to distribution of wealth to the weaker section of the society.

I met Santanu in 2014 and felt that I had finally found the clothes that my soul had always yearned to wear! Since 2018 I am an integral part of MAKU, contributing to the brainstorming process of fabric and garment design and developing the narrative behind some of the collections, including this one. I also manage the whole sale international accounts.
